Our Australian history

The Australian operation of Gallagher began trading in 1985 and is wholly owned by Arthur J. Gallagher & Co. The Australian and New Zealand operations now employ over 2,500 staff with more than 60 offices throughout Australia and New Zealand.

The group is divided into four operating entities:

  • Gallagher – providing insurance broking and risk management services.
  • Crombie Lockwood (New Zealand) – providing insurance broking and risk management services.
  • Gallagher Bassett – a multi-line third party claims administrator. Specialising in the detailed implementation and management of claims and compensation programs.
  • Pen Underwriting Agencies – a multi-line general insurance agency.

How we became the ‘locally grown’ global

In 2014, Gallagher purchased the insurance broking arm of Wesfarmers Limited, which included OAMPS Insurance Brokers (Australia) and Crombie Lockwood (New Zealand).

OAMPS history began in 1976 as the Oil Agents Mutual Provident Society (OAMPS) to source a better insurance deal for members of the fuel transport industry.  Their solution was an unprecedented success. It soon became clear that many other industries needed similar specialised insurance services – developed by people who understood their industry and its needs.

In 1989 OAMPS was listed on the Australian Stock Exchange, by which time it had become a mainstream insurance broker.  A loyal and growing clientele soon propelled OAMPS into the ranks of Australia’s Top 200 listed companies. In 2006, OAMPS became part of the Wesfarmers Group.

And then, in 2014, OAMPS was acquired by Arthur J. Gallagher & Co., one of the largest risk management and insurance broking companies in the world.

Since inception, Gallagher’s mission has been to build strong relationships with our clients and business partners, while treating each other with respect and providing solid opportunities for professional growth. The OAMPS culture, along with their client aspiration ‘to understand their clients, earn their trust, provide proactive advice, and ultimately to position them to financially survive any insurable event’, made OAMPS a perfect fit with the culture and ethos of Gallagher.

Now, with offices in more than 30 locations across all Australian states and territories, Gallagher is able to deliver personalised, local service backed by a global network of international expertise.
